MUSCLE AND BONE SYSTEM TUMORS

The masses formed as a result of the uncontrolled proliferation and growth of cells in the body are called tumors. Muscular and bone system tumors are usually benign masses and cysts. About 1% of detected tumors are malignant.
90% of skeletal system tumors develop due to unknown causes. In cases other than this, it is seen that bone inflammation, radiotherapy, congenital cystic structures and genetic factors can lead to tumor formation.


WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF MUSCLE AND BONE SYSTEM TUMORS?


The most common symptom of muscle and bone system tumors is the formation of a constant and hard swelling on the bone surface and the tendency of this mass to grow.
Another symptom is that the patient feels pain from time to time. Symptoms such as fracture of the bone without any impact, numbness and weakness in the muscles may also indicate the presence of a tumor.
Muscle and bone system tumors are evaluated in three groups:
Benign tumors, malignant tumors (cancers), tumors that occur as a result of metastasis to the bone by cancers in other organs in the body.
There are different treatment approaches according to the type, size and location of the tumor.


DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT METHODS


In the diagnosis phase of tumors, first of all, a good physical examination is performed by the physician. Then, necessary blood tests and radiological examination are requested. Direct X-ray, ultrasound/doppler, magnetic resonance (MR) imaging, and bone scintigraphy methods enable both the detection of the tumor, the determination of its type and the understanding of the stage. In the diagnosis process of the tumor, if the other examination results reveal the necessity of a further examination, this time a biopsy is performed. Biopsy can be done by taking enough cells from the area with a needle and examining these cells, or by taking the tumor with a surgical procedure and sending the samples to the pathology for control.
In the treatment of musculoskeletal tumors, factors such as the shape, size and growth rate of the tumor are decisive.
Regular follow-up may be sufficient in some of the benign tumors. However, even if the tumor is benign, if there is a risk of weakening the bone and it tends to grow rapidly, surgery is required.
In malignant tumors, early diagnosis is life-saving. The surgical approach is primarily considered in the treatment. The malignant tumor and surrounding tissues are surgically removed; Then, drugs (chemotherapy) and radiation therapy (radiotherapy) are applied to prevent the development of a new tumor. In some cases, after the tumor is removed, a prosthesis can be placed in order to prevent loss of function in the leg or arm.
Tumors metastasizing to the bone usually occur in the last stage of the disease, necessitating a more aggressive treatment. If malignant muscle and bone tumors are at an advanced stage and have spread throughout the body, the entire limb should be removed.
